Le Bac Sucré, the annual Parisian festival you can't miss if you love cake

Did you know there is a whole street in Paris dedicated to sweets? The Rue du Bac is located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris and it is known as the street with the highest concentration of patisseries and chocolateries. There is an urban legend that the mille feuille was invented in 1867 at Adolphe Seugnot’s patisserie on the street that sadly doesn't exist anymore. Florence Mazo Koenig, a culinary PR specialist whose family lived in the area for the past 3 generations, decided it was about time something was done to officially highlight the merchants on the street. So in 2015 she mobilised the locals and the council with the help of a couple of PR agencies and put together the Bac Sucré® festival. It was an immediate success and since then it takes place every year in early summer.

This year the festival is on from Wednesday 14 June 2017 to Sunday, June 18, 2017 from 10 am to 7 pm. The event is free apart from its launch which requires reservation (01 53 58 75 60 or by email at rachida.dati@paris.fr). What should you expect? Free tastings, workshops and demonstrations by the merchants on the street, along with opportunities to talk to the 21 of them directly. A sweet trail game has been set up for children, as if the sugary exhibits were not enough to grasp their attention. This year the festival is dedicated to pepper and as such they have invited as a special guest Olivier Roellinger, who is a spices expert. On Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 11am at the City Hall he will share his 'peppered' experiences in the presence of some pastry chefs and chocolate makers. This round table discussion is hosted by Fou de Pâtisserie. Expect both sweet and savoury delicacies made with different types of pepper. For example, Jacques Genin's sichuan pepper chocolate ganache (whose workshop will be installed exceptionally at 27 Rue de Varenne), a baba with apricot and sechuan pepper from La Grande Epicerie du Bon Marché , a tarte with strawberries and grapefruit compote with timut pepper and light biscuit with citrus tea from Chef Yann Brys at the Miele Espace, the "Demoiselle Tatin" a tart tatin by Angelina with caramel spiced with cinnamon, badiane and Java pepper.

Some of the most well known merchants on the street include Foucher, a family-owned chocolaterie since 1819, Angelina the famous belle epoque salon de the with the signature mont blanc and hot chocolate, La Patisserie des Rêves, with the pastries presented under glass domes in a striking pink and green background. Des Gâteaux et Du Pain is just around the corner and it is one of the highest regarded patisseries in town featuring exquisite fruity gateau (check out my blog post on them, under the section "best dessert"). Jaques Genin is another famous boutique for chocolates and caramels (try to go to their ganache workshop!) while Patrice Chapon is well known for their chocolate mousse and bars (also don't miss their demo during the festival). And let's not forget the Dalloyau which is credited with having invented L’Opéra gateau.
